The Captains of Illustration
Taipei International Book Exhibition, Taiwan
31.01-5.02.2023
The Captains of Illustration exhibition, organised and produced by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute in cooperation with the curator, Dr. Jacek Friedrich, presents a wide selection of illustrations from the publication of the same title, as well as works by Polish contemporary artists and illustrators.
In Poland, the history of children’s books and the associated school of illustration has a rich tradition. In the years 1950-1980, Polish children’s illustration triumphed around the world, and the 1960s and 70s are considered the golden age of Polish illustration. The exhibition will present examples of the work of classic artists representing the heyday and splendor of the Polish graphic art scene, which will be juxtaposed with the works of contemporary young and talented illustrators. Maintaining the tradition of the Polish school of illustration, they make books of the highest quality, both in terms of content as well as graphics, available to the youngest readers again.
Captains of Illustration: 100 Years of Children’s Books from Poland is more than a book – it is a rich visual essay which takes the reader on a journey through artistic techniques, cultural trends and important Polish art figures presented in 100 entries. Featuring over 800 illustrations by over 200 Polish artists. The beautiful images are supplemented with texts by prominent scholars and enthusiasts of Polish children’s book design. The all-encompassing historical publication has been created in cooperation with the popular, award-winning publisher Wydawnictwo Dwie Siostry.
